Virginia Beach Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Humane Groundhog Removal
Introduction
Belonging to the family of squirrels, groundhogs or woodchucks have brownish-gray fur and sturdy physique with short, strong legs. Found all over the southern U.S, these rodents are bigger and weighty than squirrels and do not spread diseases like them. They might eat the vegetables you planted in your garden and their burrows are a constant source of headache as these burrows not only cause injury to any human or animal stepping on then but damage agricultural equipment as well.
What is Drawing Groundhog towards your property?
Groundhogs are herbivores and eat at least 1 to 1 ½ pound plants including vegetables and fruits and seeds. Vegetables like carrots and lettuce, grain-producing plants like corns and soybeans planted in your lawn, fruits like berries, apples growing in your backyard or other plants like dandelion, alfalfa and clover potential sources of attraction in your property. Groundhogs might also find your lawn as a suitable place for making a burrow.
Ways of Removal
1. Removing sources of attraction
Remove possible sources of attraction. Keep your garden clean from any rock piles, debris heaps or old tree trunks the woodchuck can chisel with its teeth because these can serve as shelter. Remove any ripe fruit or vegetable as soon as possible and make sure your garden is free from anything that will attract the groundhog. Keeping the grass short, Inspect the whole lawn and filling up any holes.
2. Harassing
Simply harass these creatures and they will leave eventually. You can do this by partly digging the entry point, loosely closing the burrow entrance, pouring harmless liquid with strong scent or smell. Keep in mind that this method should be used from September to July because in early winter, groundhogs have to hibernate and in late winter to early summer, mother groundhogs have dependent young ones. During these times, removing them from their burrows will be inhumane.
3. Trapping
Traps like Havahart traps and One Door Live Traps are preferable. You can lure the groundhog by using melon any other fruit as bait. Once captured, release it at a good distance from your house. Avoid using snap traps because these might kill the animal and can even accidentally harm your pet.
4. Repellents and deterrents
Repellents with pepper spice smell help in evacuating the burrows. Throwing crushed garlic and pepper will bother them. Using ammonia solution alone or mixed with liquid detergent. Pour this into the burrow or around the entrance. The groundhogs will stop using this burrow. Some repellents have a predator’s urine as an active agent and help in removing the groundhogs. The repellents could be applied to the plants groundhogs have their eyes on. Deterrents like water sprinklers with motion detection systems work great too.
5. Close the Burrows
Close the burrow with loose material a groundhog can remove easily. Repeating this will annoy the animal and it may move out. This method is also useful to check whether a burrow is in use or not. Once a burrow is vacant, close it permanently using steel gauge because simply filling it with dirt will invite groundhog back.
6. Create vibration in Ground
Groundhogs hate it when their home is shaking. Use windmills used for lawns or place other sonic devices close to their burrow entrance. The vibrations and sounds from the sonic devices that are disturbing for them will scare them away.
7. Fencing
Groundhogs are small animals with excellent ability to climb. Use fences with mesh size less than 3 inches and at least 3 to 4 feet high. Make sure the fence is at least 1 foot deep in the ground and making L-shape footer.
Conclusion
Groundhogs or woodchucks are small rodents. They not only damage vegetation but lands as well. Using lethal methods for removal is a cruel idea. Moreover, they are not dangerous because they do not spread diseases. Encountering a rabid groundhog is a rare case. These creatures can be humanely eliminated from your property by the methods described above. If all of these methods do not work, call for professional help.
